STABILIZED APPROACHES, GOOD PRACTICE GUITE 3/12

CHANGE OF RUNWAY IN USE

PILOTS

Changing the runway at the last moment, especially when stabilisation is not possible, is risky.

Accept controllers instructions only when you are sure they can be achieved with an appropiate safety margin.

CONTROLLERS

Avoid suggesting runway changes late when weather conditions are difficult or at night. The limit mainly depends on:

  • Weather conditions.
  • Type of approach.
  • Complexy of the surroundings.
If you suggest a strategy chance, remember to take into account the fact that pilots must be stabilised and any change creates additionals workload.

You will find relevant criteria in your operational manual.
